How to Build a Professional Online Store Without Coding in Nigeria
The biggest myth in Nigerian e-commerce is that you need a developer to build a proper online store.
You do not. And the merchants who wait for the perfect moment when they can afford to hire a developer are losing months of potential revenue while that moment never quite arrives.
This guide shows you how to build a professional, functional, payment-ready online store in Nigeria without writing a single line of code. Every step below can be done by anyone with a smartphone and a Google account.
What "Professional" Actually Means
Before we get into the steps, let's agree on what we are building. A professional online store in 2026 means:
- A design that makes customers trust you immediately
- Products displayed with clear photos, descriptions, and prices
- A checkout that accepts Nigerian payment methods without friction
- A secure connection (the padlock in the browser bar)
- A custom domain that looks like a real brand (yourstore.com, not yourstore.bumpa.shop)
- A mobile experience that works perfectly because most of your customers are on phones
All of this is achievable without any coding using Builtrly. Here is exactly how.
Step 1: Create Your Builtrly Account
Go to builtrly.com and create your account. The process takes two minutes: email address, password, and your store name. That is it.
Step 2: Choose Your Theme
This is the most important step for establishing trust with Nigerian customers. Your theme is the first thing every visitor sees.
In the Builtrly dashboard, navigate to the Storefront section and open the Themes tab. Browse the available themes and preview each one on a desktop and mobile view.
How to choose the right theme for your business type:
Fashion, clothing, and accessories: Look at themes with editorial-style layouts that showcase products with large, impactful imagery. The Bloom and Luxe themes work particularly well for fashion.
Tech products and electronics: Dark-mode themes like Pulse and Matrix project the technical confidence that tech buyers look for.
Food, beauty, and lifestyle: Clean, bright themes with strong typography like Savor and Ivory communicate quality and care.
General merchandise: Themes like Bazaar and Vanguard are designed for diverse catalogs with many categories.
Once you find the theme that fits your brand, apply it with one click.
Step 3: Customize Your Brand Colors and Logo
Your theme is the starting point, not the final look. After applying it, go into the customization settings to make it yours.
Upload your logo: A clear, high-resolution logo image. If you do not have one yet, even a clean text-based logo in your brand font looks professional and is easy to create in Canva for free.
Set your brand colors: Builtrly lets you specify your primary brand color and your secondary color. These propagate through the entire theme, including buttons, accents, and headers. If your brand is burgundy and gold, your store becomes burgundy and gold with one setting change.
Set your font preference: Choose between a range of professional typefaces that match your brand personality.
Step 4: Add Your Products
In the Products tab, click "Add Product" for each item you sell.
For each product, fill in:
- Product name: Clear and descriptive. "Nigerian Tie-Dye Cotton Tote Bag" not just "Tote Bag"
- Description: Include materials, dimensions, use cases, and anything a customer cannot determine from photos alone
- Price: Your selling price in naira
- Compare-at price: If the product is discounted, enter the original price here and Builtrly will show the strike-through price and sale badge automatically
- Photos: Upload at least 3 photos per product
- Variants: If your product comes in sizes, colors, or other options, use the variants feature to let customers select their preference
Step 5: Connect Your Payment Gateway
Go to Settings and then Payments. Connect either Paystack by entering your API keys from your payment gateway account.
If you do not have a Paystack account yet, create one at paystack.com. Paystack's onboarding for Nigerian merchants is straightforward and typically takes 24 to 48 hours for full verification.
Once connected, customers can pay by card, bank transfer, USSD, and other methods depending on your gateway configuration.
Step 6: Configure Shipping
Go to Settings and then Shipping. Set up your delivery options.
For a Lagos-focused business, a common setup is:
- Lagos: 1,500 naira flat rate
- Other states: 2,500 to 4,000 naira depending on distance
- Free shipping on orders above a threshold (e.g., free Lagos delivery for orders above 20,000 naira)
Builtrly lets you create as many shipping zones and rules as your business requires.
Step 7: Connect Your Custom Domain (Optional but Strongly Recommended)
If you own a domain like mystore.com, go to Settings then Domains and follow the instructions to connect it. Builtrly provides the DNS records you need to copy into your domain registrar settings. The whole process takes about 15 minutes plus up to 24 hours for DNS propagation.
If you do not yet have a domain, you can purchase one from Namecheap or GoDaddy for about 5,000 to 10,000 naira per year.
Step 8: Launch
Review your store from the customer perspective using the preview function. Click through every page. Add a product to the cart. Check how the checkout looks on mobile.
When everything looks right, set your store to live and share the link.
After Launch
Post your store link on all your social media platforms. Send it to your WhatsApp contacts. Add it to your Instagram bio. If you have an existing customer list, send them a message announcing your new store.
The store is the foundation. The traffic is the work that follows.
